Chapter Eight

What should she do today? Ellie stepped into a pair of shorts, then pulled a V-neck, sleeveless, knit shirt over her head. Would she see Daniel?

She shook her head. Cancel that.

As she gazed at herself in the mirror to catch her hair into a loose ponytail, the earrings Chad placed in earlobes caught the early-morning sunlight.

Maybe she’d take TheBus into Honolulu. Or back to Waikiki. She’d seen some interesting shops the other night. A necklace to match Gram’s earrings would be nice. She might even give it to Gram.

Funny how Chad was so hung up on these earrings. She’d never known her brother to notice jewelry of any kind, but he certainly liked her silver flowers.

It was probably their link to Gram. He didn’t say it, but her brother was homesick and it would be another year before he got back to Texas.

The Simmses were a close-knit family. Ellie couldn’t imagine growing up like Daniel had, without cousins and aunts and uncles popping in and out of her personal business. Sure there were spats and jealousies and gossip, but there was also love and generosity of spirit.

Poor Daniel.

Poor Daniel, nothing! Ellie puffed out a disgusted breath. The man would not be a part of her day today.

So naturally she found him sitting at the picnic table when she opened the patio door.

Good holy grief.

Determined not to notice how the early-morning sun picked out the blond highlights in his pale hair, she marched over so she could glare at close range. “Scram. Or else, buster. I mean it!”

He didn’t so much as bat an eyelash, just looked beleaguered. “Ellie, I can’t. I tried to tell you that last night.”

“You left last night,” Ellie told him coldly. “I checked.”

“Yeah, but I don’t know how I did it.”

“One foot in front of the other probably. You can practice now.”

If anything, he looked even more put upon. “Uh, no. I’ve tried that. One foot in front of the other doesn’t do it. I get stopped every time.”

“Mmm-hmm. So how did you manage last night?”

“I, uh…well, it was a…phhtt. ”

“A what? I didn’t catch that.”

“A phhtt, ” Daniel repeated. “One second I’m here, and the next second I’m not. You know, phhtt! ”

“My name isn’t Alice, and this ain’t Wonderland,” Ellie said coldly. “What the heck are you talking about?”

He scowled right back at her. “That’s what I’m trying to tell you. I don’t know what the heck I’m talking about!”

His scowl seemed familiar.

“Just listen to me, would you? When I can finally leave, I’m just gone. I don’t walk away. I don’t run or fly or swim. I’m just not here anymore. In the blink of an eye, I’m somewhere else.”

That silenced her. Ellie stared at Daniel for a long moment, then slowly sat down on the bench beside him.

“Where are you?”

“In the Kamehanas’ back garden.”

“What?”

“What I said. I’m in the Kamehanas’ back garden. I told you I woke up there after I swam in the cove, remember? And that’s where I’ve been ever since.
